MINERAL: COPPER

Copper is an essential mineral element that helps the body produce red blood cells and plays a key role in metabolism. It is distributed in all major organs (heart, liver, kidney, brain...) and is transported in blood by a protein called ceruloplasmin. It is also contained in many enzymes responsible for metabolism. Copper is easily lost by the body through daily perspiration but can also be stored by the body so daily intake is not required.

Having low blood copper is a condition called hypocupremia. Extreme deprivation may cause convulsions, premature gray hair, loss of bone density and anemia due to iron deficiency and poor growth from interfering with how the nervous system and thyroid gland function. Copper deficiencies are often associated with iron deficiencies. Having too much causes vomiting, liver damage, diarrhea and a metallic taste in the mouth.

Copper is found in a variety of foods such as vegetables (with cooper in the soil), seafood, liver and brewer's yeast but with the use of copper piping in most people get it from their drinking water.

It should be noted that copper in jewelry (ei: copper bracelets) may look nice but is not a means of supplementation.

Not all the articles are about nutrition, however, and there are lucid writings on related topics like stress and exercise.
